Some 15km or so north of Ohrid, the popular tourist resort of Struga offers a unique and fascinating wealth of things to see and do when in the region. Steeped in historical significance and the birthplace of several historical figures of note including Vlado Maleski (1919-1984), the man who wrote the words to the nation’s national anthem, Struga can be treated as both a short excursion from its more illustrious neighbour to the south and a destination in itself. Home to the annual international Struga Poetry Evenings held every August and perched at the confluence of the Black Drin and Lake Ohrid, as well as the selection of recommended places to visit listed here it’s also worth spending an hour or two exploring the Old Bazaar and getting to see at least one of the centuries-old historical mosques.
