KOLEŠINO & SMOLARE WATERFALLS

If you’re in the Strumica area, like the sound of wild running water and feel the urge to escape to the forest, you’re in luck—twice. Close to the village of Kolešino is the hugely popular waterfall of the same name, a year-round wonder whose waters reflect the seasons in their diversity and that features among the most popular tourist attractions in the southeastern part of the country. Still relatively undeveloped, with just a wooden viewing bridge and a place to enjoy a picnic currently on offer, plans are currently being developed to build a hotel and restaurant at the site. Get there soon before the magic’s lost forever. Meanwhile, tucked into the far southeastern part of the country close to the Bulgarian and Greek borders, at almost 40 metres the hugely impressive and dramatic falls at Smolare, hidden away in a dark and mysterious forest, are the tallest in the country and a more than worth the trek to experience them.
