MAKEDONIUM

Opened in 1974 on the 71st anniversary of the Ilinden Uprising, this extraordinary-looking white building in a park just north of the Toše Proeski Memorial House is dedicated to both the soldiers who perished during the aforementioned struggle and the local Macedonian Partisans who gave their lives fighting the fascists during the Second World War. Inside is the tomb of Nikola Karev (1877-1905), the former president of the short-lived Kruševo Republic, four gorgeous stained glass windows and little else. Check out the related monuments in the surrounding area, and note that there’s often the chance for children to ride one of the horses in the field nearby.
