The spectacular Šar Mountains cover an area of 1,600 square kilometres, of which just over half is located within the borders of North Macedonia. Home to the eponymous Šarplaninac sheepdog and rich in flora and fauna including turtles, bears and wild boar, the mountains provide a living for the locals who split their activities between working on the land and providing services to the scores of tourists who visit to hike, climb, enjoy the wilderness and ski at the region’s resorts including the hugely popular Popova Šapka—Priest’s Hat—some 70 kilometres or so west of Tetovo at an altitude of around 1,780 metres above sea level.
